Some Lazio and Celtic Fans Don't Like Each Other Very Much
Here's the context behind the banners at the Stadio Olimpico
Ciro Immobile’s brilliant brace sent Lazio through to the UEFA Champions League knockouts and eliminated Celtic from European competition for 2023-24.
Despite the well-spirited battle on the field, Lazio’s Ultras targeted those that made the journey from Glasgow through an offensive banner which referred to the club’s Irish influence,
"The famine is over. Go home f****** potato eaters."
If you’re trying to link potatoes to Scotland, don’t bother. The sledge is aimed at Celtic’s Irish heritage due to Ireland’s Great Famine suffered in the 19th century.
This was in response to the huge banners “Anti Fascist Glasgow Celtic” and “Lazio Vaffanculo” (Lazio f*** off) which were displayed when Lazio visited Parkhead in October on match day two.
Going back to 2019, the two sets of diehard fans have maintained the hostilities which were carried over from UEFA Europa League meetings, both of which Celtic emerged victorious. Both clubs were also sanctioned for their banners.
Lega Football was sent photos from fans at the Stadio Olimpico on match day five. However, there are more concise accounts from the DailyMail and the Irish Mirror where some of the other banners can be seen.
Recently, Celtic was fined for “provocative messaging” and “blocking public passageways”, and it appears Lazio will face a similar punishment, as explained here by the Telegraph.
What’s most important to remember is that the vast majority of Lazio and Celtic fans do not keep hostilities. Commiserations to the Bhoys and better luck next season.
Lazio has the opportunity to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.
